The Colosseum

When visiting Rome, the must see monument is the Colosseum. It is the main attraction in Rome. The Colosseum originally called the Flavian Amphitheatre is located in Rome, Italy.  It was commissioned by Emperor Vespasian in 72 AD to give as a gift to the Roman people. His soon Titus completed the construction in 80 AD. The Colosseum sat 55,000 people, the seating was according to status rank. The knights sat on the lowest tier, the wealthy citizens were seated in the middle and the plebs in the highest level. The activities held inside the Colosseum were wild animal fights, executions, public spectacles and gladiatorial combats. Games inside the Colosseum lasted 100 days and nights, during that time 5000 animals were slaughtered. They later changed it to 117 days and had a killing spree of 9000 gladiators. The walls were originally covered in travertine and the statures were made of marble. Outside the arena there stands 80 arches, which allows easy access for all the guest to enter the site.  The arena is divided out into three parts the cavea, arena and podium. They also had trapdoors which led to underground chambers to beneath the arena floor. Earthquakes have damaged the arena, but you are still able to appreciate its architect. In 2007 the Colosseum was named one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. The Colosseum is the largest Empire of the Roman Empire. Today the Colosseum is a huge tourist attraction, it attracts 16,000 to 19,000 people daily.
